Growing
Pecans in NC
North Carolina consistently ranks in the top 10 states
in production of new and improved pecan varieties. Georgia leads
the nation in pecan production, followed by Texas, then Alabama.
The largest concentration of commercial pecan orchards
in North Carolina is located east of Interstate 95. However, some
commercial growers in the Piedmont are highly successful. Being
more inland and usually away from hurricanes, establishment of orchards
on suitable soils in the Piedmont is encouraged.
Well-managed orchards will produce 1,200 to 1,500
pounds per acre. Prices paid by major shellers for quality in shell
pecans usually average about $1.00 per pound.
Most soils and the climate in eastern and central
North Carolina are conducive to profitable pecan farming.
